Our practice evening for this full moon will be a more fullsome opportunity to rejoice in and bring to mind our late friend, guide, teacher, trustee and brother, Abhayakirti. As many of you know Abhayakirti passed away on Tuesday the 25th June in the evening at the Saint Barnabas House hospice in Worthing. Having finally succumbed to the advancing and aggressive cancer he had been living with for a year and a half.
He was born on September the 30th 1954, so was only a few months off 70 when he died.
The evening will follow on from the actual funeral which will take place in Cambridge the day before. For this reason we at the Brighton Buddhist Centre felt it was important to have a full chance for our Sangha here to come together and recall him, rejoice in his many good qualities and celebrate his life.
The evening will begin with a short Metta Bhavana, followed by space for people to speak about Abhayakirti and rejoice in him, tell stories, laugh and no doubt shed a tear or two, followed by a simple puja and chanting of the Vajrasattva mantra and the mantra of Amoghasiddhi.
I’m aware that for some people that maybe did not know Abhayakirti, there might be a feeling of intruding on a private space. This is certainly not the case and all in the Sangha are very much welcome - those who knew him of course, but also those who did not. Here is a chance to witness some of the Buddhist attitude to death and dying. Something we all come to sooner or later.
With much metta,
Sthanashraddha.
