Tai
Chi is a way of using the body that can help us develop a sense of being
centred and grounded.Tai Chi is known for its ability to allow us to find
ways to relax and release stress.
The tai chi taught at the Brighton Buddhist Centre follows the sequence
created by Cheng Man Ching. It is one of the Yang family forms. Dharmakara,
the tutor, is currently training with Wee Kee Jin. Wee Kee Jin studied
with Huang Sheng Shyan who studied with Cheng Man Ching.
Wee Kee Jin emphasises three main benefits of learning Tai Chi in order
of importance:
i) Health
ii) Philosophy
iii) Martial arts
Health comes first because all other
aspects of our life are difficult or impossible without it. Modern clinical
trials are consistently finding that the practice of Tai Chi is beneficial
for both maintaining health and assisting recovery.
The philosophy of Tai Chi is relatively easy to understand but it is through
the practice that we literally begin to embody these ideas. This leads
to a deeper and enriched engagement with life. The martial component is
emphasised to some degree from the beginning of our training. It is intimately
bound up with the health and philosophical aspects of the art. Through
training our alignment, relaxation and whole-body movement we develop
a 'soft force'. To allow and trust that this force can have a martial
potential takes a lot of patience!
