Right-livelihood businesses

We have a number of associated activities in the wider community of the city, conceived and run by Buddhists.

Evolution Gifts
42 Bond St Brighton

Amoghavajri working in the shopWe have a branch of Evolution Gift shops here in the city, located in Bond Street in the popular North Laines. It is one of many outlets run by the fwbo Charity Windhorse Trading. It stocks a wide range of decorative and household items - glassware, soft furnishings, candles, mirrors and an extensive choice of ethnic crafts. Imported goods are sold from all over the world: Bali, Java, Lombok, Kenya, Thailand, India and more.

The shop is run by Buddhists who have chosen to use their experience of work as a means of deepening their practice of Buddhism. Of course, it is possible to do this in whatever work one does, in whatever circumstances, but it is often enhanced and intensified by working with other Buddhists who share common goals.

The Christmas rushOne of the primary purposes of any Buddhist business is the observance of ethical principles. Not harming other beings or the environment, truthfulness, compassion and helpfulness are all priorities for the people that work in them. Although it is difficult to determine every condition of our work, we make every effort to only deal with suppliers that are not exploitative or damaging and we do not trade in animal products.

All of the profits of the shop go towards supporting Buddhist endeavours, two of which are the Brighton Buddhist Centre and the Karuna Trust.

The Redidose Co. Ltd.
17 Tichborne Street, Brighton

Redidose is a small business, manufacturing and selling pill dispensers. It is housed in the basement of the Buddhist Centre and was set up by the late Shuddhananda who gave it to the Buddhist Centre in 1995. Since January 2001 it has been run by two Buddhist women plus a handful of helpers forming a small team.Redidose dispenser

We sell our products to hospital and community pharmacies, care homes, wholesalers and to individuals. They seem to be of real benefit to many people. Being directly linked to the business world does offer many opportunities to meet situations with clarity, friendliness, reliability and honesty. When people come into contact with the Redidose Company we want to exemplify our Buddhist practice in the running of the business.

It is a benefit to have a variety of people working at the Centre on a regular basis. The actual assembly work is simple and repetitive which lends itself for people to work together easily, exchanging ideas and deepening their knowledge of each other, thus the development of friendships is encouraged.
